Ernest Courant Traineeship in Accelerator Science & Engineering
Program Description and how to enroll:
Stony Brook University in collaboration with Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and FERMI National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) has established the Ernest Courant Traineeship in Accelerator Science & Engineering supported by a 5-year grant from the High Energy Office of the US Department of Energy. This novel program is named after eminent accelerator physicist, Ernest Courant, who lay the foundation of modern accelerator science. At Stony Brook, the traineeship is a part of the Center for Accelerator Physics and Education (CASE).
The main goal of the Ernest Courant Traineeship Program is to train scientists and engineers in the field of accelerator sciences
with a focus in the four areas identified as the DOE Mission Critical Workforce Needs in Accelerator Science
and Engineering:
(1) Physics of large accelerators and systems engineering
(2) Superconducting radiofrequency accelerator physics and engineering
(3) Radiofrequency power system engineering
(4) Cryogenic systems engineering (especially liquid helium systems).
The graduate level curriculum consists of courses and practical training at accelerator
facilities of the collaborating institutions, and thesis requirements. Each participant will have a supervisor to guide the training. Every graduate student
– PhD, MS/MSI, ME - successfully completing the 12 credits of accelerator courses
in this traineeship program will be issued a
Certificate in Accelerator Science and Engineering
with specializations including the four areas listed above.
Any student is eligible to earn this certificate

ELIGIBLE US CITIZEN FINANCIAL SUPPORT THROUGH THE TRAINEESHIP PROGRAM CRITERIA/ENROLLMENT/BENEFITS:
Stony Brook University student(s) interested in this unique opportunity in 21st century accelerator sciences see the below criteria to enroll:
Students must be US citizens or permanent residents to receive financial support outlined below.
The Traineeship Program has a maximum number of participants per year.
Please obtain an email ECT Program admittance confirmation from the Program Director, Professor Vladimir Litvinenko in order to enroll.
The ECT Program offers up to two years of financial support (fixed stipend, health insurance, tuition) for enrolled students.
The participant (enrolled student) must be enrolled in at least one of the 4 eligible courses per semester to receive this support.
Students must successfully complete (B+ or higher grade) for four or more eligible 3-credit accelerator courses to receive
continued support
for the balance of 2 years (Total number of relevant credits 12) and will receive
the SBU Certificate in Accelerator Sciences.
The Traineeship Program can be completed in two years and students can pursue their research interest beyond the program
(for example, complete their PhD).
