Chemistry program - In this week-long program at Stony Brook University, rising 9th-grade students will explore foundational chemistry concepts through engaging, hands-on laboratory investigations. Topics include atomic structure, intermolecular forces, solubility, acids and bases, and chemical kinetics. Throughout the program, students will investigate real-world phenomena through experimentation, data collection, and analysis. Key laboratory experiences include observing electron energy levels through flame tests and bright-line spectra, exploring intermolecular forces through surface tension experiments and polymer slime synthesis, creating solubility curves and growing crystals, analyzing acids and bases using indicators and titration techniques, and examining reaction rates of chemical reactions. The program emphasizes scientific inquiry, allowing students to build conceptual understanding by exploring chemical phenomena firsthand.
Instructors: Kristin Visconti and Glenn Mayola
Biology program - This engaging program introduces students to major topics and techniques in biology,
such as biotechnology, genetics, evolution, and related life science concepts. Through
hands-on activities and laboratory investigations, students will explore real-world
biological phenomena using inquiry-based learning and scientific analysis. Emphasis
is placed on asking questions, collecting and interpreting data, and drawing evidence-based
conclusions. The program is designed to build confidence and develop essential skills
that will support student success as they enter high school Life Science courses.
