Drees and the relativistic heavy ion group at Stony Brook study the quark gluon plasma at RHIC using the PHENIX experiment. We characterize the plasma at its early stages, when it is hot and dense. To this end we focus on penetrating probes such as electromagnetic radiation, jet probes including high transverse momentum particles and their correlations, and the production and fate of heavy quarks.
