AFS 283 COMMUNITY SERVICE
Department of Africana Studies, Stony Brook University
The Department of Africana Studies is dedicated to the twin goals of academic excellence and social responsibility. Consequently, in addition to traditional classroom instruction, opportunities are provided for AFS students to perform service for the benefit of the community, both on and off campus.
This three-credit course is open to U3 or U4 students enrolled in Stony Brook University in good standing. Admission to this course is limited and requires permission from the Department of Africana Studies.
Community Service may include supervised participation in:
- TriCYA Mentorship
 - BlackWorld Newspaper
 - Africana Studies Library
 - University Gospel Choir
 - UNITI Cultural Center (UCC)
 - Off-campus Church Ministry
 - Community school mentoring
 - Community health organizations
 - Other approved community activities
