Environmental Defense Fund Archive Record Group 5: Colorado Office Sub-group and Series Descriptions SG I Administrative -- the functions dealing with finances, public relations and organizational policies and procedures I.1 Administrative-Counsels Series 1: George Pring, 1974-77 [2 inches] Articles and speeches authored by the first Regional Director on environmental issues from a legal perspective. I.2 Administrative-Public Information and Communications Series 1: Interoffice Bulletins, 1978-82 [2 inches] Activity reports for distribution to the other EDF offices. Series 2: Events 1974 [2 inches] This series documents significant events in the history of the office. Contained herein are photographs of the press conference about the opening of Environmental Defense Fund’s office in Denver. I.3 Administrative-Fundraising Series 1: Correspondence & Memoranda, 1974-87 [2 inches] Correspondents include the Executive Director, Regional Director and fundraising staff concerning grant proposals, potential fundraising avenues, and fundraising procedures. Also included are several copies of progress reports to foundations. Series 2: Fundraising Events, 1974, 1979 [2 inches] Correspondence, flyers and invitations on the creation and marketing of an education film The Last Days ofthe Dolphin and the benefit premiere of The Electric Horseman. I.4 Administrative-Office Manager Collections of clippings from local newspapers related to water quality and air quality issues of interest to staff. SG II Energy -- concentrates on energy issues and the impact of power plants on air quality as well as the efforts to implement air quality controls for the Colorado region. II.1 Energy Program-Staff Files II.2 Energy Program--Legal Files Series 1: Litigation Files 1975-1980 [16.35 linear feet] Collected filings from litigation and administrative hearings on coal mining regulations, air quality standards, and the Federal Prototype Oil Shale Leasing Program Series 2: Background Documents 1975-1980 [6 linear ft] This series is comprised of published and unpublished material collected during the
preparation phase of litigation and/or public proceedings. They provide context and
detail to the energy issues under investigation in the courts. II.3 Energy Program—Project Files II.4 Energy Program-Public Statements / Texts Series 1: Comments, 1974-1984 [1.25 linear ft] Written in response to requests on proposed regulations or policy, comments reflect EDF’s position on issues related to regional energy projects and legislation. Series 2: Testimony, 1975-1983 [7 inches] This series consists of text of testimony given before committees on energy topics. The most frequent topics are the Oil Shale Lease Program, synfuels, and sulfur dioxide emissions standards. Series 3: Writings by Program Staff, 1979-1984 [5 inches] The series encompasses articles, and reports, both draft and published, on energy related matters. SG III Water Resources -- concentrates on water resources—its quality, management, and supply as it applies to the western states III.1 Water Resources Program-Staff Files Series 1: Correspondence & Memoranda 1974-76 [2 inches] Progress reports to the Executive Committee and Executive Director reporting on work and successes of the program. III.2 Water Resources Program-Legal Files Series 1: Litigation & Hearings files, 1975-1980 [13 linear ft] Filings from litigation and administrative hearings on issues related to water quality and water management in Colorado and Utah, including motions, judgments, briefs, and testimony as well as documents produced during discovery. Series 2: Background Documents, 1978-1980 [1.25 linear ft] This series is comprised of published and unpublished material collected during the preparation phase of litigation. They provide context and detail to the Colorado Water Storage Project and the Columbia Dam. Common document types are monographs, government documents, progress reports, meeting minutes and manuscripts. III.3 Water Resources Program-Project Files Series 1: Committees & Meetings 1983-1990 [2 inches] This series is based on other non-litigation work in which EDF was involved either as part of a program initiative or as representatives in state- and region wide committees and meetings. Series 2: Project Files 1977-1986 [2 linear ft] This series is based on other non-litigation work in which EDF was involved either as part of a program initiative or as representatives in state- and region wide projects. III.4 Water Resources Program-Public Statements/Texts Series 1: Comments, 1974-1982 [2 inches] Comments present EDF’s position on water issues such as salinity control of the Colorado River, industrial water marketing, and water quality standards. Series 2: Testimony, 1975, 1979, 1984 [1 inch] The text of testimony presented before congressional committees on water quality, water policy, and the Industrial Water Marketing Program. Series 3: Writings by Program Staff, 1976, 1984 [1 inch] Manuscripts of articles, reprints and printed reports on the program focus area. Issues presented are water use, water supply and water quality SG IV Nuclear Energy -- focuses on nuclear energy resources and the efforts within the organization and as participants in state wide committees to deal with nuclear waste disposal. IV.1 Nuclear Energy Program-Staff Files IV.2 Nuclear Energy Program-Legal Files Series 1: Litigation & Hearings Files, 1982-1991 [3.50 linear ft] Filings from litigation and administrative hearings on nuclear waste disposal, including motions, judgments, briefs, and testimony and documents produced during discovery. Series 2: Background Documents, 1979-1985 [8 linear ft] This series is comprised of published and unpublished material collected before and during litigation. They provide context and detail to the nuclear waste disposal standards. Common document types are monographs, government documents, progress reports, and manuscripts. IV.3 Nuclear Energy Program-Project Files Series 1: Committees & Meetings, 1987-1988 [2 inches] Correspondence, minutes and comments produced by the High Level Waste Licensing Support System Advisory Committee. The Committee was a cooperative effort between energy and environmental advocates during the rulemaking on nuclear waste repositories by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The committees existed to plan and carry out improvements in air and water quality and waste management at the State level. Committees represented are the Environmental Strategy Committee and the Integrated Solid Waste Management Committee.
