• PURCHASING AND REGISTERING FOR A PERMIT

  When to Purchase/Register
  Student permits are issued by semester.  All permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. Semester permits will be available for purchase or registration online on the following schedule:

  • July 15- Fall Semester
  • Dec 1- Spring Semester
  • May 1- Summer Semester

  How to Purchase/Register
  Students will use their NetID to access the parking portal to purchase or register for their parking permit.  A student will only see permits available to them.  They will need their vehicle make, model, color and license plate number.  MAPS uses virtual permitting, which means the vehicle license plate number is used to verify parking assignments.

  • Commuter students will be able to register a maximum of 2 vehicles at a time.
  • Residential students will be able to register a maximum of 1 vehicle at a time.
  • Students will be able to change vehicles through the parking portal as needed.
  • It is the responsibility of the student to ensure their vehicle information is kept updated in the parking portal.

  Payment Options
  Students may choose to purchase a permit through their student account or by credit card.

  • Student account: The charge for the permit will appear on the student bill as “Surface Pay Lot Fee”.  The charge should appear within 2-3 business days of your registration. You can access your student bill to make a payment by logging into SOLAR. Please note that financial aid does not cover parking fees.
  • Credit card:  All credit card numbers are tokenized and credit card information is not stored in the system.
• REFUNDS

  Refunds for permits are made on a prorated basis. Retroactive refunds are not offered for failure to terminate parking in a timely manner.  The last day for student permit refunds are based on the following schedule.

  • November 1- Fall Semester
  • April 1- Spring Semester
  • July 1- Summer Semester

  No refunds are issued for permits revoked due to misuse.

  How to Return a Permit

  1. Log in to the parking portal using the NetID
  2. Click permits
  3. Your active permit will show, click view
  4. Click Request Cancellation
  5. Click Confirm
  6. Click Complete
• ALTERNATIVE PARKING OPTIONS

  Daily Parking

  Students may park in an available visitor facility at the daily rate. 

  Evening Parking 

  West Campus, South Campus, and Lot 40 are enforced Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. unless otherwise signed.  Outside of those hours, the lots are available for use by other types of permit holders without penalty.  Please note that designated spaces (i.e., reserved, state vehicle, ADA, etc.) are enforced 24/7.

  Evening permits for Administration Garage and Health Sciences Center (HSC) Garage are available to students on a monthly basis.  The monthly permit will auto-renew until canceled.  Students may set up recurring credit card payments or sign into the portal to pay by the 7th day of the month. Please note, evening parking will still be using our old Stony Brook Parking Permit System for the time being, and will transition to our new Parking Management System at a future date. At that time, the link above to sign in will be updated accordingly. 

  • Administration Garage- Hours of access are from 2:30 p.m. - 8:00 a.m., Monday - Friday, and all day Saturday/Sunday.
  • HSC Garage- Hours of access are from 4:00 p.m. - 9:00 a.m., Monday-Friday, and all day Saturday/Sunday.  You will access the facility by using your SBU ID.
• DISCOUNTED PERMIT PROGRAM

  Student feedback has highlighted a concern for affordability. As such, 10% of each permit type is offered either at a discounted rate or for free on a first-come, first-served basis.

  Students interested in the discounted permit will add their name to the waitlist through the parking portal. We recommend students purchase another type of permit to guarantee they receive the parking option they want while on the waitlist for the discounted permit. Should a student be granted a discounted permit after purchasing one for full price, a refund will be issued to the original payment method. Students who apply for a discounted permit will be notified on their eligibility no earlier than five (5) business days after the registration window opens each semester.

  Please note:

  Students who are PELL grant or TAP eligible may apply for this permit waitlist. Please note, graduate students are not eligible for discounted permits, as PELL grants and TAP are only offered to undergraduate students.  By selecting this as an option, the student gives permission for the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships to share their financial need eligibility with Parking Services. Permits will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and it is not guaranteed that by adding your name to the waitlist you will receive the permit.

• PARKING RULES AND REGULATIONS

  Users of a University-issued Parking Permit acknowledge responsibility to operate and park a vehicle on campus in accordance with Stony Brook University's Parking Rules and Regulations. 

  MAPS uses virtual permit parking. Parking assignments are verified using license plate recognition (LPR) technology.  Every vehicle plate must be linked to a permit.

  1. Only one (1) linked license plate per permit may be parked on campus at any given time.
  2. The license plate must face towards the drive aisle.

  Things to keep in mind:

  • All vehicles must be parked within the marked boundaries of one parking space or stall.
  • Grid areas are not parking spaces.
  • In gated facilities, individuals may not use their access card to allow someone else to enter and/or exit the facility. Access is for the permit holder only. Individuals that do so will be responsible for paying the applicable daily parking rate.

COMMUTER STUDENT PARKING DETAILS

All students that do not live in campus housing are defined as Commuter Students. Commuter Students are eligible for three types of permits: Commuter Core, Commuter Perimeter, or Commuter Satellite.
