Biography
Luis Alvarez-Gaume was born and raised in Madrid, Spain. He got his BA at the Autonoma
University in Madrid in 1978, and his PhD from SBU in 1981. That year he joined the
Harvard Society of Fellows, and became junior faculty in 1983. After a brief stay
in 1986 as full professor at Boston University, he joined the Theory Division at CERN
as a senior member in 1988 until 2016, when he came back to SBU as professor of physics
and director of the Simons Center.
Research Statement
My primary interest has always been quantum field theory and its applications. I have
also worked on string theory and cosmology, and lately my interests have shifted into
disordered systems and computational complexity, while trying to keep up with developments
                           in QFT and string theory.
