AI Use Guidelines for Graduate Students
Our discipline teaches and studies academic writing and diverse literacies; fosters
human agency and originality of thought through the writing process; and advocates
critical reflection on the affordances and limitations of AI and other technologies.
So, it is appropriate that our students seek to understand and practice how generative
AI, as well as other emerging technologies, affect their writing and identities as
scholars and teachers. The Department of Writing and Rhetoric permits students to
experiment with AI to assist writing and learning processes. Generative AI tools may
be used with the knowledge that these tools produce plausible patterns of words rather
than locate expert content, as well as performing other functions. So, students must
verify and cite all content and also convey significant functional uses they made
of AI tools in the process. Students should navigate appropriate integration or use
of AI tools depending on their project and goals in consultation with their advisor
or instructor.
