Graduate Awards
Judith Tanur Sociology Dissertation Fellowship Award
The Judith Tanur Sociology Dissertation Fellowship Award is presented each summer
to a Ph.D. candidate who is in the research or writing phase of a doctoral dissertation.
The $4,000 award is designed to provide financial support at an important time in
the research or writing process, and is to be used to increase time devoted to the
dissertation in lieu of pursuing a salary through teaching or other work.
Ph.D. Student Paper Awards
Three Graduate Student Paper Awards are granted annually to Sociology Ph.D students:
- The David Street Award is given to the best qualitative and/or theory paper.
- The Hanan Selvin Award is given to the beest quantitative and/or methodological paper.
- The Rose Laub CoserAward is given to the best theory and/or research paperin gender studies.
Norman "Norm" Goodman Endowment Excellence Award in Sociology
This endowed award will provide annual $1,000 cash award to a full-time graduate student who "demonstrates high academic achievement as deined by Stony Brook policy and who demonstrates achievement, experience or commitment to academic excellence, leadership or community service as reported through the application process.
