Judith Lochhead is Professor of Critical Music Studies at Stony Brook University.  Lochhead’s research focuses on music of the present from analytical, historical, critical, and ethnographic perspectives.  Lochhead’s recent co-edited volume is forthcoming in Spring 2026:  The Music of Absence: An Aesthetics of Loss in the New Millennium, edited with Peter Edwards and Christine Dysers, Edinburgh University Press. Lochhead teaches a variety of music theoretical, analytical and historical courses in the Department of Music at Stony Brook.  These include: 

Undergraduate: Sound Structures, a music major introduction to music theoretical concepts of the world; Music and Culture of the 1960s; American Music of the 20^th and 21^st Centuries. 

Graduate Seminars: Timbre Analysis; Phenomenological Approaches to Music Analysis: Enactive Cognition; Perspectives on the Performance of Music Since 1945: Music Analysis, New Materialisms, and Music of the Present; Performance and Analysis of Contemporary Music.
