Request Information about Graduate Programs

Since the 1990s, our department has been at the forefront of the sociological study of global processes. We emphasize the connections between global and national dynamics in shaping social inequalities. Our faculty bring expertise in the environment, health, gender, international development, and migration, as well as politics, culture, and computational social science. Methodologically, we are a diverse department, spanning both quantitative and qualitative approaches. We train students to apply the most rigorous and appropriate methods to address the most pressing research questions of our time.

The Department of Sociology offers both M.A. and Ph.D. programs. Our doctoral program is ranked among the top 50 sociology Ph.D. programs nationally by U.S. News & World Report. Our graduates pursue careers across a wide range of settings, including research universities, selective liberal arts colleges, teaching-focused institutions, and intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations. Recent alumni have secured positions at the University of Pittsburgh, the University of North Carolina–Greensboro, SUNY Brockport, California State University–Bakersfield, the University of Memphis, the University of Northern Colorado, New
York University (postdoctoral fellow), Stockholm University (postdoctoral fellow), Yale University (research scientist), and the United Nations Statistics Division.

Located in close proximity to New York City, our students have opportunities to take courses at NYU, CUNY, Columbia University, and other nearby institutions. In addition to our rigorous graduate training, students may complete certificates in affiliated programs such as Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; Africana Studies; and Data and Computational Sciences, among others.
